Latest on Waitohi proposal

The HWP represents a collection of community groups that have a shared vision to see the Hurunui district become a lush and green productive area. We have the support of the landowners across 42,000 hectares, most of which have no current access to water for irrigation. North Canterbury residents see the project as a way to improve welfare for the entire community, which is highly dependent on agriculture for sustainability. The current shareholders of HWP are the Hurunui Irrigation and Power Trust (HIPT), the owner of Eskhead Station, MainPower Trust and Ngai Tahu Property.

Farmer Liaison Committee
A Farmer Liaison Committee (FLC) has been formed to allow shareholders to discuss their views in a low key environment. The group will also discuss irrigation techniques and may put shareholders in touch with farmers in other regions who irrigate. People wanting to know more can contact FLC chairman Mark Zino or the HWP office.

HWP selected as preferred Waitohi option
The Waitohi Irrigation Scheme Selection Panel has endorsed HWP's Waitohi proposal over two competing developers. Link to the Environment Canterbury report here or read more about the reasons why our Waitohi scheme got the nod here

HWP proposes to develop a series of four water storage dams on the Waitohi River. This storage will support a community irrigation scheme which will irrigate just under 60,000 hectares in the Hurunui, Waipara and Kowai catchments.

HWP's October 2011 Waitohi resource consent application does not replace our 2009 resource consent application for water storage within the South Branch of the Hurunui River and Lake Sumner.

Instead it is a supplementary application.

The Waitohi resource consent application will not be processed until April 2012 in accordance with the Environment Canterbury (Temporary Commissioners and Improved Water Management) Act 2010.

You can access the application on the Environment Canterbury website or click below for more information on why we have chosen Waitohi as a water storage location.
