HWP and the HWRRP

The purpose of the Hurunui Waiau River Regional Plan, or HWRRP is to promote the sustainable management of rivers and streams, and groundwater in the Hurunui, Waiau and Jed river catchments.

The Plan was prepared in accordance with the Resource Management Act (1991) and, following lengthy community consultation, became operative in December 2013.

In order to implement the HWRRP a Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) was put in place by the Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee.

How the HWRRP and ZIP Impact on HWP

Within the ZIP, the Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee had included a provision for HWP to return to a Hurunui River/Lake Sumner storage solution if the proposed Waitohi Irrigation & Hydro Scheme was not viable.

However, the Commissioners hearing the HWRRP, did not carry over this provision into the ZIP, so currently that option is, in effect, off the table.
