Hurunui Water Project

News Updates

What is happening with the project's resource consent application and the Water Conservation Order (WCO) process?

The recently-announced moratorium on consent applications to take water from the Hurunui River will mean a fourteen month delay. Both the project's resource consent application and the Water Conservation Order process are affected by the moratorium. Despite this, the project is supporting the moratorium as it will give the Hurunui community breathing space to allow the Hurunui-Waiau zonal committee to address these issues.

How does the Hurunui Water Project fit into the Canterbury Water Management Strategy?

The Hurunui-Waiau zone was chosen as the first catchment for consideration under the CWMS. The zonal committee was announced in June 2010 and will start looking at the future management of Hurunui District's water. HWP chairman Mike Hodgen is one of seven community members selected for the committee. The project expects that much of its research will be used by the committee as they begin deliberations. We are looking forward to working with the committee and improving their awareness of the project.
